The Acting Rent Control Commissioner, Frederick Opoku, at Ghana’s Rent Control Department recently carried out unannounced inspections at various hostels, including Ambassador Gardens and Poly Annex, which cater to students from Kumasi Technical University.
During these inspections, they discovered numerous issues, such as faulty electrical systems, inadequate sanitation, and cramped living spaces, all while students are being charged fees as high as GH¢10,000 annually. Opoku raised concerns regarding the licensing of these facilities and urged the Ghana Tourism Authority to intervene, as students are often left to contend with makeshift accommodations that offer little more than a small fan for comfort.
