Abla Dzifa Gomashie, the Minister for Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts, has unveiled plans to establish a second National Theatre in Kumasi, aimed at enhancing the cultural and creative infrastructure within the Ashanti Region.
However, the Minister emphasized that the government’s immediate focus is to finalize the ongoing theatre and Centre for National Culture project in the area before initiating construction of the new facility.
During the Accountability Series held on Monday, August 10, 2026, Madam Gomashie articulated that the proposed Kumasi National Theatre is part of a larger governmental strategy to fortify the nation’s cultural and creative arts framework. “We plan to build a second National Theatre in Kumasi,” she stated.
The Minister noted that she had recently toured various theatre and Centre for National Culture facilities throughout the Ashanti Region, which led her to recommend to Cabinet that the government prioritize the completion of existing projects rather than embarking on the construction of a new facility.
She confirmed that Cabinet has approved her proposal, thus facilitating the completion of the current infrastructure project. “I took a tour of the Ashanti Region’s theatre and Centre for National Culture spaces. I have suggested to Cabinet that instead of starting a new one, we focus on finishing what has been started,” she remarked.

Madam Gomashie further elaborated that this strategic approach aims to optimize government resources by ensuring that existing infrastructure is completed before allocating funds to new initiatives. “Cabinet is in approval of that suggestion. So that is what is going to happen, and if the opportunity arises, we will initiate a new project,” she added.
In addition to the plans for Kumasi, the Minister revealed intentions to rehabilitate the existing National Theatre in Accra, as part of broader efforts to enhance the facilities available to the creative arts sector.
The anticipated second National Theatre in Kumasi is expected to significantly broaden access to major performing arts and cultural infrastructure in the Ashanti Region, while also providing additional space for creative productions and cultural activities.
