Why Chelsea Won the Final But Didn’t Qualify for the Next Club World Cup

  • Chelsea won the new-format Club World Cup 3-0 over PSG, however they were not given automatic qualification for the 2029 competition.
  • Chelsea is now 14th in the standings, meaning that only the top UEFA-ranked teams and Champions League winners are eligible.
  • The Blues need to raise their UEFA rating or win the Champions League in order to qualify for the 2029 tournament, even if they have $125 million and international renown.

Despite winning a historic victory in the redesigned Club World Cup, Chelsea has not advanced to the 2029 FIIFA Club World Cup. Enzo Maresca’s team startled the football world with a resounding 3-0 victory over PSG, the current Champions League winners.

To cap off a commanding first-half performance, Cole Palmer put on a display with a spectacular brace, while new signing Joao Pedro added a sophisticated chip. Chelsea won the Club World Cup for the first time in 2021, and this victory is their second.

Even more significant, though, is this most recent triumph—they are now formally the first winners of the recently redesigned competition. The Blues defeat domestic rivals Manchester City, who defeated Fluminense 4-0 to win the title in 2023. Surprisingly, Chelsea’s victory did not automatically qualify them for the following Club World Cup, despite earning them $125 million in prize money and international prominence.

Why Chelsea Won the Final But Didn’t Qualify for the Next Club World Cup

FIFA’s new Club World Cup structure will use a continental allocation mechanism to determine the 32 qualifying teams. Twelve of these spots go to UEFA, the European governing body. They are separated into the following categories:

The Champions League qualifying cycle champions receive four berths, while the remaining eight are given out according to UEFA club rankings.

FIFA does not guarantee the event victor a participation in the following edition, even though the Blues won the 2025 edition of the Club World Cup.

Rather, even though they lost in the final, PSG, one of the most recent Champions League winners, is already guaranteed till 2029.
