In the realm of football, success is often determined by performance in both penalty areas, and it appears that Chelsea has significantly strengthened one side over the other.
Xabi Alonso commenced his tenure at Stamford Bridge with a thrilling 3-2 victory in the Premier League against local rivals Fulham on Monday, showcasing a revamped attacking trio that captivated the audience.
Morgan Rogers, who made his debut following a club-record £117 million transfer from Aston Villa, formed a formidable partnership with Cole Palmer and Joao Pedro, delivering a remarkable offensive display.
All three forwards found the net, with Palmer particularly impressing as he returned to form after a challenging year plagued by injuries, which ultimately led to his exclusion from England’s World Cup squad.
Conversely, concerns linger regarding goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, who was culpable for two errors that allowed Fulham’s Josh King and Gonzalo Garcia to score.
Alonso emphasized the importance of his forward trio taking the lead, asserting that their performance would inspire the rest of the team to elevate their play.
However, Sanchez has a considerable amount of ground to cover. When questioned about the goalkeeper’s mistakes, Alonso reiterated the need for collective accountability within the team.
“We must acknowledge and learn from these mistakes,” the Spaniard remarked. “This is a journey we are on.
“Every aspect of our game from the forwards to the midfielders, the defense, and the goalkeepers requires improvement.”
Post-match, former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher, who shared a playing history with Alonso, expressed on Sky Sports that Palmer, Rogers, and Joao Pedro are “as formidable as any trio in the Premier League at this moment.”
He also suggested that Chelsea “will struggle to win the league with Sanchez in goal.” Will this prediction prove accurate?

Joao Pedro wasted no time, scoring just 31 seconds into the match by capitalizing on a pass from Palmer and deftly lifting his shot over Fulham goalkeeper Bernd Leno, marking Chelsea’s fastest goal since October 2016.
After King equalized, Rogers made an immediate impact by scoring from close range just before half-time.
Yet it was Palmer, netting Chelsea’s third goal, who truly distinguished himself.
He has faced a frustrating 18 months due to a persistent groin issue that interrupted his impressive start at Stamford Bridge. Notably, he matched last season’s Premier League assist tally by setting up Joao Pedro.
Palmer’s skill and creativity were evident throughout the match against Fulham, complemented by his commendable work ethic. This performance resembled the dynamic player who previously dazzled during his first season at Stamford Bridge and played a pivotal role in dismantling Paris St-Germain in the Club World Cup final last year.
“Over the summer, I took the time to rest and recharge, and now I’m ready and hungry,” Palmer, now just two goals shy of 50 in the Premier League, shared with Sky Sports.
He certainly exuded a renewed vigor.
During Chelsea’s pre-season tour in Australia, he expressed a desire to prove himself and acknowledged that a lengthy summer break felt unusual after participating in major tournaments for three consecutive years.
“Cole Palmer was sensational,” stated former Manchester United defender Gary Neville on Sky Sports. “He and Morgan Rogers were electric alongside Joao Pedro the front three were outstanding.
“That performance was reminiscent of the old Cole Palmer. It was truly a sight to behold.”

While Palmer and Joao Pedro have typically been Chelsea’s primary attacking threats, the addition of the impressive Rogers has further bolstered their offensive capabilities.
Rogers’ arrival reunites him with Palmer, a former Manchester City teammate whom he affectionately referred to as his “best friend in football” after the victory at Craven Cottage.
“He had a challenging season last year due to injuries, and you could see in his eyes during pre-season and training that he’s ready to prove people wrong this year,” Rogers commented on Palmer’s performance.
“That was evident in his display. He was by far the best player on the pitch, showcasing exactly what he can do. It’s fantastic to have him on our side.”
Moreover, it was encouraging to see Rogers, despite a shortened pre-season due to his involvement in England’s World Cup campaign, appear fit and powerful.
He became the first Chelsea player to score on his Premier League debut since Christopher Nkunku in 2023 and the first to create five chances in his inaugural league appearance since records began in 2003-04.
The away supporters also joyfully debuted a new chant for Rogers.
Like Palmer, Joao Pedro was also sidelined from the World Cup, missing out on Brazil’s squad, but returned to pre-season with an impressive tally of eight goals in seven matches.
It was hardly surprising to see him find the net so early in the Premier League season, especially after inheriting the number nine shirt from Liam Delap, who was omitted from the squad on Monday following the Brazilian’s recent contract extension.
“Great synergy, exceptional quality,” Alonso remarked to BBC Match of the Day when discussing his front three.
“We know that if we can position Joao Pedro, Morgan Rogers, and Cole Palmer effectively, they possess the talent to create remarkable moments. I am thrilled that all three forwards found the scoresheet.
“It’s crucial that we facilitate them in the best possible ways. I’m genuinely pleased for all three; they played for the team.”
“Sanchez Could Undermine Their Efforts”
Nevertheless, questions linger about Sanchez, who allowed King’s low strike to slip through his grasp for Fulham’s equalizer, and then unconvincingly parried Timothy Castagne’s shot into a perilous area, paving the way for Garcia’s header that set up a tense conclusion.
“They have fortified every position on the pitch, but one cannot afford to take chances with goalkeepers,” Neville stated.
“I’ve mentioned before that it is the most demanding position on the pitch, one that endures the most scrutiny, and if you have a goalkeeper who is prone to errors and appears anxious, it undermines everything you aim to achieve.
“It’s a significant issue. One must acknowledge it as a problem.”
There was little room for Sanchez to evade criticism.
King’s equalizer, recorded in the 23rd minute, had an expected goals on target (xGoT) value of merely 0.05, marking it as the lowest-rated shot to result in a goal during the opening weekend of the Premier League season.
In essence, Sanchez should have saved it.
While he executed several other saves, he also conceded a corner after failing to clear the ball before it went out of play and was later unconvincing when attempting to deal with a long ball, with Antonee Robinson missing the target and allowing him to escape further scrutiny.
Although Alonso defended Sanchez following the match, in his pre-match press conference on Thursday, he stated, “The pitch dictates everything. I do not make the decisions; the players must demonstrate their capabilities.”
This message also applies to his goalkeepers Sanchez and number two Mike Penders, 21, who is awaiting his debut after a successful loan spell at Strasbourg.
With the transfer window still open, many Chelsea supporters may be questioning whether the club requires a new first-choice goalkeeper.
As Carragher noted, “They must resolve the goalkeeping dilemma because it will inevitably resurface as an issue this season, just as it did tonight.”
