Alhassan, a prominent supporter and content creator of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has pleaded guilty to charges of engaging in offensive conduct and publishing false news in the Accra Circuit Court. The specific allegations against her include making outlandish claims that Ghana President Mahama had buried 32 live cows, one in each region, as well as suggesting that recent floods were caused by supernatural forces.
She appeared in court before Justice Emmanuel Asmah, where she was subsequently remanded in custody until her sentencing, which is scheduled to take place on July 16. As part of the standard procedure in Ghanaian courts, Alhassan has also been ordered to undergo a pregnancy test. The charges brought against her fall under the provisions of the Criminal Offences Act, which stipulates penalties of up to three years in prison for such offenses.
The case has sparked intense debate and reactions, with opinions sharply divided along political lines. While some individuals have expressed outrage and condemnation of Alhassan’s actions, others have criticized the laws under which she has been charged, arguing that they are being used as tools to suppress dissenting voices and stifle free speech.
