The electricity tariff is set to increase by 3.49%, and the water tariff will go up by 0.85%, starting from July 1st, as announced by the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission. This information is included in a press statement released on June 22.
The statement says, “Taking into account the overall impact of the Hydro-Thermal Generation Mix, the Ghana Cedi-US Dollar Exchange Rate, the Inflation Rate, and the Natural Gas Price, the Commission has decided to increase Electricity Tariffs by 3.49% for the entire country during the third quarter of 2026,” the PURC stated.
It also mentioned, “Water Tariffs have been increased slightly by 0.85% for the third quarter of 2026.”
According to the regulatory body, “These adjustments have been made in accordance with the Commission’s responsibility to review tariffs on a quarterly basis to reflect the changes that have taken place during the quarter. The quarterly reviews monitor and take into account changes in important operational factors, which are not within the control of the Utility Service Providers (USPs), but are essential for providing the services they offer.”
The statement also pointed out, “These operational factors include the exchange rate between the Ghana Cedi (GHS) and the United States Dollar (US$), the domestic inflation rate, the electricity generation mix, and the cost of fuel, mainly natural gas, which is used to power the thermal plants.”
The PURC further explained, “These quarterly adjustments are made by the Commission to keep the real value of the current tariffs stable, which helps the utility service providers stay financially healthy and continue to provide their services to consumers.
At the same time, the Commission takes into account how these tariffs affect the general well–being of consumers.”
