Awentami Paul Afoko, a candidate for the National Chairmanship of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has committed to fostering what he terms “total discipline” within the party if he is elected to lead.
In his remarks, Mr. Afoko emphasized that the NPP’s path to regaining power hinges on the necessity for unity and restraint among its members, cautioning against public disputes that could undermine the party’s cohesion. “If I win the National Chairmanship position, I will bring total discipline to the NPP. The politics of insults will have no place here. We must remember that we are all part of the same party and family, and we should avoid turning against one another,” he asserted.
During an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen program, Mr. Afoko outlined his vision for the party, which he encapsulated in what he refers to as the “three Rs”: reuniting the party, re-energizing its structures, and recapturing political power. “Our focus will be on these three Rs: reuniting the party, re-energizing our structures, and ultimately regaining power,” he stated.
He further articulated that discipline is crucial for fostering unity and effectiveness within the party, drawing an analogy to a tug of war, where lack of discipline leads to members pulling in different directions. “We need discipline in the party. Indiscipline breeds disunity. A united and disciplined approach is essential for us to draw power towards us,” he explained.
Mr. Afoko reassured party members that he is known for his disciplined approach to politics and emphasized that he remains unaffected by emotions in his decision-making. “Party members recognize my discipline. I do not act on impulse,” he remarked.
If elected, he pledged to enforce discipline while simultaneously creating avenues for members to voice their concerns without tarnishing the party’s reputation. “In our pursuit of power, it is vital to understand our boundaries. Given the current state of the party, discipline is imperative,” he noted.
He encouraged members with differing opinions to utilize internal mechanisms for resolving conflicts rather than airing grievances publicly. “If you have dissenting views, let’s address them behind closed doors. We should not air our dirty laundry in public,” he advised.
Additionally, Mr. Afoko stressed the need for the party to reassess its strategies to appeal more to the youth and to reclaim supporters who have drifted away. “Upon assuming the chairmanship, we will undertake a comprehensive reformulation of our strategies. We must win back those we have lost, especially the youth,” he asserted.
He reiterated that unity should remain at the forefront of the party’s efforts, reminding members that internal disagreements should not fracture the bonds that unite them. “Discipline requires us to acknowledge that, like the teeth and the tongue, we coexist in the same house. We are all part of the NPP, and we must collaborate,” he concluded.
