Saltiana Aderibigbe, widely recognized as DJ Salt of Life, sister to Nigerian Afrobeats star Ayra Starr, has recounted a harrowing experience in Lagos, where her vehicle was reportedly vandalized by a group of local thugs, commonly known as area boys.
In a recent social media post, DJ Salt expressed her distress over the incident, revealing that she was targeted due to a mistaken identity, with the assailants repeatedly shouting her sister’s name during the altercation. “They damaged my car yesterday, and it was truly disheartening. The fact that they kept yelling Ayra Starr’s name made the experience even more alarming, as they believed I was her,” she stated.
DJ Salt highlighted a broader issue affecting motorists in various areas of Lagos, where certain street gangs allegedly solicit money from drivers, particularly those behind the wheel of high-end vehicles. She pointed out that noncompliance with these demands can lead to intimidation, threats, or property damage. “Just imagine, this is the reality in Lagos when you drive a nice car. These area boys won’t let you pass unless you give them money. If you refuse, they might resort to throwing stones at your car or causing damage. It’s essentially coercive,” she explained.
The DJ raised concerns about the need for immediate intervention from authorities to address this troubling trend, questioning how such a dangerous situation could be effectively managed.
